Good Cheer Shawl

Brew a cup of tea, grab your favorite book, and bundle up in this shawl near the fire .

Cozy, squishy, and totally wrap-able, this aran-weight shawl has everything you love to knit. With a little bit of lace and a little bit of texture you’ll enjoy the process as much as wrapping up in the super-soft finished shawl that is large enough to keep you warm on the coldest day.

The single-ply Malabrigo Worsted yarn provides excellent stitch definition that really shows off your work. Pick four skeins of your favorite aran weight yarn and get started!

Grandma’s Peppernuts

Our Grandma Childs made these spicy little cookies every Christmas and shared them with all her children. They are different than traditional Peppernuts (or Pfeffernuss) as they do not have any anise or pepper in the recipe. I guess she never liked the traditional flavors and neither did any of her children or grandchildren. We love these poppable sweets just as they are in all their ginger-y, molasses-y goodness!

Peppernuts

From the kitchen of Gay Rosenberg Childs

Ingredients:

3/4 cups sugar

1 cup dark molasses

1 cup shortening

1/2 cup water

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 tablespoon ground ginger

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground cloves

6 cups flour

Directions:

Cream sugar, molasses, shortening, and water together. Sift together all dry ingredients and mix until incorporated  and forming a stiff dough. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for at least four hours. Roll chilled dough into snakes about 1/2 inch in diameter and cut 1/2 inch slices. Scatter on ungreased baking tray. Bake for 10 – 12 minutes at 350 degrees farenheit. Allow to cool on pan. Store in airtight container  and snack away! Makes about eleventy-billion tiny cookies.

Candy Floss Socks

I’m so excited to announce my newest pattern. Introducing, Candy Floss Socks!

Candy Floss, or Cotton Candy here in the US, is a favorite summer treat at parades, festivals, or theme parks and is equal parts cute, fluffy, squishy, and sweet! These socks echo all those qualities with a delicate little twisted cable that adds just the right amount of sweetness to a cozy, squishy sock.

You can find the pattern on Ravelry by clicking here.

I’ve also created a little tutorial on the left twist cable stitch that I use. I hope you enjoy the pattern and please share your finished objects!

Episode 19: Preserving Family Heirlooms

What a crazy few weeks it’s been! The most significant thing that has happened is the house fire of our dear friends, who have lost everything (they are all safe, though!). That has sparked our discussion on preserving family heirlooms, as we are helping in restoring a special fiber piece. We hope you enjoy our goofy chatter (just like always) as well as the more serious. We also rediscover that Emily has a really morbid sense of humor. As if that was in doubt.

Announcing our Giveaway Winner!

The beautiful and talented Klara Zhulamanova has donated a copy of her Glacier Ice Shawl. It’s a stunning pattern that we think you’ll really enjoy. We are pleased to announce that JohnaJacobs on Ravelry is the winner! Please contact Emily to receive that pattern. Congratulations!

Snippets from the Past – preserving family heirlooms

These are the steps I took in trying to restore the lace piece of our friends. I am not an expert so please take that into account if you follow along on this journey. I can’t guaruntee your outcome.

Before:

Step 1 – Gentle soak in cool water, brushing away debris with fingertips.

Step 2 – Soak in baking soda and vinegar dilution.

Step 3 – Second soak in cool water.

Step 4 – Soak in wool wash – very diluted. This removed the smoky smell finally.
